    Alec Paterson

    Alec is a serial entrepreneur building businesses across a variety of sectors from start-up to successful exit. But the last 10 years have been focused on his love - the food industry. His experience as an award winning producer, a retailer, and a distributor have taught him how to view the industry from every angle seeing the pain points and opportunities across the entire supply chain.

     

    Alec joined BoroughBox in 2019 with a shared vision to develop a holistic supply chain solution for independent food brands, delivering multiple sales channel and logistic solutions as a catalyst for rapid growth.

    Amanda Miles Ricketts

    Amanda Miles Ricketts is the founder of award-winning wellness brand The Niche Co. Inspired by the healing properties of natural herbs, Amanda created Niche as an answer to her own skin issues she suffered once reaching her 30's. Amanda found by incorporating herbal tea into her diet, she saw a huge difference in the condition of her skin and hair and wanted to share her findings with the world.

     

    The Niche Co burst onto the food and drink scene in 2017 with a range of functional tea blends using only the finest whole leaf tea in beautiful recyclable packaging. Since then it has been sold in 15 countries and featured in a wealth of publications including British Vogue, French Vogue, and Forbes. Niche Teas were named the best herbal teas by the Independent and The Evening Standard.

     

    The Niche Co has a new exciting range in the pipeline, set to launch in early 2021. Amanda also works as a mentor and is passionate about helping food and drink start-ups.

    Andy Lawson

    Andy is founder & CEO of BoroughBox, whose mission is making better food & drink accessible to everyone. An end-to-end supply chain solution for independent brands, and a destination for customers interested in provenance of product, BoroughBox combines online retail, marketplace, distribution, and logistics services.

    With an extensive background in digital & ecommerce, Andy spent a number of years at the coal-face of the food and drink sector working as a producer. During this time he saw first-hand the challenges facing independent brands as they tried to scale. He decided to combine his skillset and knowledge to help bridge the gap and give producers an opportunity to move from being the challenger brands of today to the mainstream brands of tomorrow.

    Anna Richey

    Anna and Alla are the founders of Two Chicks, the UK's first and leading liquid egg white brand, on a mission to make healthy living easier. Two Chicks launched in Selfridges back in 2007 after identifying a gap in the market for a fat and cholesterol free, lower calorie alternative to whole eggs.

     

    Since then, the brand has created a range of convenient and innovative egg-based products, including an organic liquid egg white, an ambient egg white, and a fresh ready-to-use pancake mix, with more exciting product launches planned in 2022. You can find Two Chicks in leading UK retailers including: Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Ocado, Whole Foods Market, Booths, Amazon Fresh, Abel & Cole, as well as in leading international retailers in France, The Netherlands, and the UAE.

    Anthony Fletcher

    Anthony has founded Believe in Science which is working to radically reformulate bakery products removing sugar and fat using new approaches to baking and ingredients. Their first product is the Urban Legend donut which as the same calories as a slice of buttered toast.
     
    Previously he was the CEO of graze growing the business to over $100m in revenue. Along the way it also built the world’s fastest, most accurate snack weighing machine, gathered half a billion consumer snack ratings and designed a box-folding robot which can fold cardboard in 16 different ways. He led the sale of the business private equity group Carlyle in 2012 and then to leading global consumer group Unilever in 2019.

     

    Previously, Anthony held various roles at the smoothie business Innocent Drinks, including manufacturing, innovation and knitting lots of bobble hats

    Chris Green

    Chris co-founded Young Foodies in 2017, fostering a community of challenger food & drink brands by providing expert knowledge, experience and growth services to enable them to thrive. Inspired by his own experiences, Chris set up Young Foodies to help young, consumer brands drive progress in the FMCG industry with their true consumer-led innovation.

     

    Chris was inspired to pursue a more entrepreneurial career while at Ella's Kitchen, before moving on to influence the success of other independent brands including Metcalfe's Food Company during a period of rapid growth. Purpose-driven and passionate about instigating positive change in the industry, Chris puts his wealth of SME knowledge to good use in the pursuit of value creation for both YF, their expansive network of brands, and the wider industry ecosystem. Chris is a media commentator, panellist, and awards judge.

    Claire Harper

    Claire Harper is the co-founder and Managing Director of Greater Manchester based Harper Innovations, parent company of Muscle Moose. Muscle Moose specialises in bringing protein snacks and drinks to the mainstream, with stockists in the UK including Sainsbury’s and Holland & Barrett. Following a period of rapid growth, Muscle Moose products are now stocked in several countries across the globe.

     

    Believing that everyone should have easy access to healthier alternative snacks, Claire works with her team at Harper Innovations to produce innovative protein fortified products that offer customers a better snacking choice.

    David Folkman

    David grew up in the North during the 'Madchester' scene, enjoying the good music and bad haircuts. His adventurous streak led to a fondness for travelling, ski-racing and flying planes.

     

    After studying business, he worked in a number of roles at Mars, Nestle and innocent drinks before taking a more entrepreneurial path. This led him to consult for start-ups to multi-nationals, co-found a posh cordial brand called Fiovana and a popped cheese business called Cheesies. He’s currently Managing Director at CleanCo, a low alcohol spirit brand founded by TV personality Spencer Matthews.

    Emma Maile

    Emma joined haysmacintyre as a trainee and qualified as a chartered accountant before progressing to directorship.

     

    She specialises in the hospitality sector, working with finance teams to not only help with compliance and regulatory requirements, but also with due diligence projects and other financial challenges such as cash flow forecasting. She works for a vast array of clients ranging from large restaurant and pub groups to start ups within the FMCG space, with a particular focus on food and drink companies. Emma has worked with a number of her clients as they have grown from start ups to mature businesses and enjoys assisting businesses owners as they face new challenges though exciting change.

     

    Emma prides herself on forming strong relationships with her clients and regularly attends specific events in the industry as well as writing articles on topical issues. This allows her to share best practice with her clients to provide them with year-round service.

    Gareth Hobbs

    Gareth is MD of Visionary Food Solutions, a team of Food and Drink specialists who work with brands needing commercial support to accelerate their business. The company has a huge focus on working with brands that are new, innovative and on trend, whilst Gareth’s role is heading up the team he also mentors a number of brand founders as they plot their course from conception to launch, and scaling up.

     

    As well as working with founders, Gareth works with young entrepreneurs and students from a number of universities.

     

    Outside of Visionary Food Solutions and the world of Food & Drink, Gareth is also Co-Founder of a number of food start-ups, with a focus on sustainability.

    Gráinne Allen ​

    Gráinne has been 30 years in the food industry and has a unique level of experience, her work is firmly based on her unparalleled breadth and depth of knowledge in all aspects of the Food Industry particularly in the fields of innovation, strategy, best practice, and change management. Grainne has run many multi-million-pound product strategies in retail, manufacturing, food service and brand.

     

    She is Visiting Professor on the Food Innovation and Consumer Management degree at the Ulster University Business School.

    Heerum Fleary

    Heerum has been a food & beverage buyer for over 15 years. She has worked mainly in foodservice and food manufacturing for large blue chip companies.
     
    Innoveat Group Ltd was founded by Heerum in 2015, it is the UK’s largest virtual marketplace for food, beverage and packaging brands as well as creating the UK/World’s first centralised supplier and buyer directory via an app.
     
    After a career in airline catering, Heerum founded TickEat in 2015: a strategic business partner for food and beverage brands seeking to place their products into mainly the travel, leisure and hospitality industries.

    Jacob Thundil MBE

    Jacob Thundil founded Cocofina - The Coconut Experts, 16 years ago from his kitchen table and is now enjoyed in 28 countries worldwide. Two more innovative food businesses are in the making, one of which is Sozyë, a sauce company using sustainable British seaweed instead of soya. The other venture is a patent pending project in the area of sustainable food packaging.

     

    In October 2020 he was awarded an MBE for services to International Trade and Exports in the Queen's Honours list. Jacob is an export champion for the Department of International Trade and is also on the Board of Brunel Business School.

    James Shapland

    Coffee #1 & Coffi Lab

    James Shapland is the Co-Founder of Coffee #1. Under his tenure Coffee #1 won Best Coffee Chain in the UK over 4 consecutive years and cemented itself as a formidable presence on the British high street. In 2011, James sold the business to Welsh brewer SA Brain for a record sum. Coffee #1 is now visible in over 100 locations across the UK.

     

    James is currently developing a new neighbourhood coffee brand, Coffi Lab with launch anticipated in the second half of 2020 in Cardiff.

     

    Prior to Coffee #1 James worked in European Equities at Investment Bank, Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. He studied French and Business at Birmingham University.

    Jamie Barber

    Jamie is an entrepreneur, advisor and the co-founder/CEO of Hush Mayfair, Cabana Restaurants and Hache Restaurants.

     

    He is a "Dragon" on BBC/Netflix's My Million Pound Menu. He's also the former owner of Kitchen Italia, Villandry Restaurants and Sake No Hana.

     

    Jamie is an investor and advisor to various retail and leisure funds. He's also an ex-corporate lawyer with media firm Harbottle & Lewis.

    Jason Gibb

    After a decade of being a TV producer, Jason bought an abandoned olive grove in Italy and started a business selling olive oil. With no background in food it was a sharp learning curve but soon their oil was selling in shops like Selfridges, Harrods, John Lewis and Waitrose.

     

    When Jason started out, there was little support for food businesses like his so he started an online forum for food and drink entrepreneurs called The FoodHub to share the tales of triumph and disaster and all those handy tips they have learnt along the way. The incredible response inspired him to start the UK’s first food founders’ festival.

     

    Jason is now working on a vegan brand called Unruly Foods which aims to bring plant based foods to the masses.

    John Shepherd​

    John Shepherd is the Owner and Managing Director of Partridges which is one of the few family run speciality food shops in central London. This year it is celebrating its 50th Christmas in Chelsea and still cherishes its original idea of providing the very finest quality foods. Partridges was awarded a Royal Warrant as grocer to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 1994 and in 2008 John became President of the Royal Warrant Holders Association.
     
    Eight years ago Partridges launched Startisans, an initiative to help ‘Start-Up Food & Drink Artisans’ find a route to market and it operates the vibrant Saturday Food Fine Market outside its flagship store in Duke of York Square, Chelsea.
     
    On behalf of Partridges, in recent years, John has received ‘Icon of Speciality Food’ Award and ‘In Good Taste’ Award at The Chelsea Awards as well as hosting the third annual World Chelsea Bun Awards which last year went online with entries being received from all over the world

    John Stapleton

    John Stapleton is the ‘Authentic Entrepreneur’ with 30 years’ experience in pioneering new FMCG categories and establishing and growing successful consumer-led businesses in both the UK and the USA. John now actively manages an investor/Non-Executive Director portfolio contributing value-added business growth advice, guidance and mentoring to business owners.

     

    John has first-hand experience in start-up, early stage growth and scale-up stage businesses, having co-founded 3 FMCG businesses, building and growing each to exit.

     

    John helps design creative, practical, experience-based solutions to problems, challenges and opportunities that brand owners encounter in starting, growing and scaling their companies, across all areas of business.

    Jon Simon​

    After travelling around Australia in his early twenties, Jon teamed up with his brother in law (Tristan) and set out to re-invent the humble British pie. They scrabbled together some basic equipment and set up Pieminister in Bristol. The business now operates a successful chain of restaurants across the UK, supplies all the major supermarkets and fine food halls and holds the crown as the number 1 premium pie brand in the UK.

     

    Jon has been recognised in The Sunday Times Maserati 100 innovators list, Sunday Times Fast Track 100, London Stock exchange 100 Companies to Inspire Britain and won multiple awards for Entrepreneurship.

     

    Jon actively continues to support ethical and sustainable entrepreneurs and start-ups. He’s also the co-founder of Good Sixty, an ethical e-commerce platform supporting independent food producers and retailers.

    Jon Wright

    Jon Wright is the co-founder of innocent drinks, the juice company he started with two friends from a market stall in 1999 and now the biggest juice brand in Europe, and Jam Jar Investments, a venture capital firm that invests in UK start-ups including Deliveroo, Graze.com and Babylon Health.

     

    Jon and his two co-founders sold their controlling stake in innocent to Coca Cola in 2013 with the business valued at over half a billion dollars. They remain on the board as advisors.

    Julianne Ponan

    Julianne Ponan is the CEO of free-from snack brand Creative Nature which creates, manufactures and supplies raw super foods, snacks and food mixes which are free from the top 14 allergens.

     

    The company exports to 14 countries and is now well known in the UK for its delicious products and baking mixes. They are stocked in major supermarkets including Asda, the Co-op, Sainsbury’s, Tesco as well as many independent outlets up and down the UK. The company also sells online.

     

    Julianne went on to trademark the name and brand to protect it in the future – all on a £35k budget. To measure how far she has come in 2020 the company’s turnover should reach close to £2million. Julianne is also on an international speaker on business matters and on allergy and anaphylaxis awareness.

    Karen Green

    Karen is MD of Food Mentor, a consultancy business which supports food and drink brands in creating profitable sales growth through better marketing, gaining more listings and negotiating better deals.

     

    Karen was originally a retail buyer for Tesco and Boots and then crossed the table into commercial roles, latterly for ichiban UK selling sushi to UK retailers and also launching the Yumie sushi brand.

     

    Outside of Food Mentor, Karen is NED for several food brands and volunteers for Virgin Start up as business mentor and trainer. She is also a volunteer mentor for PWN on the Cote D’Azur where she lives. She is also the author of best selling book Recipe for Success – the ingredients of a profitable food business

     

    Khushali Patel

    Khushali is qualified as both a chartered accountant and chartered tax advisor providing her clients with a rounded service.

     

    Her focus is predominantly on corporation tax compliance and advisory matters for businesses operating within the hospitality sector, ranging from pubs, restaurants, food and drink companies, gyms and hotels. Khushali has vast experience working with a wide variety of clients which are at various stages of the business lifecycle, from small owner managed business to large international groups, assisting them with their corporation tax matters in the UK and internationally. She enjoys forming close bonds with her clients to provide a personal and value-added service.

     

    Khushali’s specialist advisory areas include working closely with clients to maximise capital allowances claims, due diligence projects and establishing share option schemes. She also has vast experience in providing SEIS/EIS advice and assessing and preparing R&D claims for clients.

    Lucy Wager

    Lucy is a passionate product developer turned entrepreneur, launching a first to market plant based brand, Pudology in 2012 and more recently becoming co-founder of free from kids brand Little Bandits.
     
    Lucy has a breadth of experience across the industry, having started her career in the chilled own label food supply base before becoming a Retail Product Developer, and then onto her entrepreneurial pursuits.

     

    She now supports start ups and established Food Brands at her consultancy business Out to Launch Ltd. She is also co-host on the foodie podcast “Oh for Food’s Sake” where she talks candidly about the highs and lows of working in the industry, to help support professionals in the industry in their own careers and businesses.

    Margie Nomura

    Margie is a chef, food writer and founder and host of Desert Island Dishes, a chart topping podcast and online community for people who love food. The weekly podcast has more than 3 million downloads to date and sees Margie interview a special guest about the seven dishes that have shaped their lives. Previous guests include Stanley Tucci, Prue Leith, Monica Galetti and Levi Roots.

    With well over a decade of experience as a professional chef, Margie trained at Ireland’s world-renowned Ballymaloe Cookery School and has since cooked all over the world including South Africa, where she spent several months teaching Zulu women how to cook. Margie’s work as a chef in the UK has seen her cook for some of the biggest names in fashion, from Temperley London to Manolo Blahnik and even for the Queen at Windsor Castle.

    Mark Cumming

    Mark Cumming has almost 20 years of experience within FMCG, initially spending 5 years with the Nielsen Company uncovering Insights to help FMCG brands unlock growth and then moved to Coca-Cola where he spent over 12 years in a variety of different roles including Insights & Strategy, Category Development, Commercial, Revenue Growth Management and Shopper Marketing.

     

    This year Mark moved across to Costa Coffee (part of the Coca-Cola Company) to lead the FMCG business which includes responsibility for expanding the Ready to Drink Costa Coffee and the Costa Coffee At Home Coffee ranges in the UK&I”.

     

     

    Morag Freathy

    With a deep passion for both food and people, Morag is perfectly placed to lead the Business & Industry division at Compass, where she is responsible for Eurest and 14forty - Compass’s specialist workplace catering and facilities management businesses.

     

    Compass Business & Industry operates 700+ workplaces restaurants in the UK, serving approximately 250,000 meals a day with a great many FTSE 100 companies trusting Eurest to nourish their teams, alongside many more SMEs.

    In 2020 Morag has overseen the launch of a brand-new food philosophy and menu that offers scalable, sustainable and nutrition-led options to boost employee health and wellbeing. In addition to heading up Eurest from 2017 to 2019, Morag has a wealth of food and drink knowledge having also previously worked for a number of top High Street brands.

     

    Myles Hopper

    Myles is co-founder and Chief Community Officer of Mindful Chef. A professional nutritional coach and former Fitness First Ambassador, Myles studied at one of the world's most respected nutrition education programs.

     

    Having worked in the health and wellness industry for over a decade, Myles is able to draw upon real client data and experience. Myles runs Mindful Chef’s community and brand partnership programmes such as One Feeds Two and B Corp.

     

    Nick Coleman

    Nick Coleman has co-founded Snaffling Pig, Startup Logistics & Medical Supermarket.

     

    Inspired by the food and drink category and seeing a gap in the market to innovate a traditional pub snack, he focussed on taking the humble pork scratching to places it’s never been before. He has appeared on Dragons’ Den, and was the GBEA UK Food and Drink Entrepreneur of Year UK 2019.

    Paddy Willis

    Paddy launched the UK's first food & drink accelerator and is CEO of Mission Ventures Ltd, driving new initiatives to help transform the food industry. He also sits on the Investment Committee for Batch Ventures (Mission Ventures' JV with Warburtons), the Good Food Fund (tackling childhood obesity) and Vala Capital's EIS fund.

    He is listed in the inaugural "The Maserati 100"​ (2015) recognising entrepreneurs supporting the next generation.

    Paul Brown

    Paul enjoyed early success with BOL Foods, quickly gaining listings in a number of the UK’s biggest supermarkets and delivering sales in the first two years that exceeded all expectations. The brand had become one of the fastest growing FMCG start-ups – despite joining a market dominated by international heavy-weights.

     

    Over the last few years, BOL has served over 35 million portions of fruit and veg and are continuing to work with incredible chefs and nutritionists to develop even more innovative, delicious products and recipes so that BOL will be available to enjoy at any time of the day.

    Paul (Pablo) Ettinger

    From starting with 5 small coffee bars in London in 1997, over 10 years he built the F&B and commercial side of the business. From 2008 he focused on the International development of Caffe Nero with particular responsibility for food and beverage and more recently has further concentrated on the development of the music promotion activities of Caffe Nero.

     

    They now have over 1000 stores in eleven countries including Harris & Hoole and Coffee#1.

     

    He is also a founder-investor in Sam’s Riverside restaurant in Hammersmith and Ding Ding streetfood restaurant in Tooting.

    Away from food he co-founded and is Chairman of Talentbanq, London’s leading grass-roots live music agency and is an active angel investor.

    Peter Sidwell​

    Peter Sidwell is not only a chef, TV presenter and author of five cookbooks. He is an entrepreneur of multiple businesses across various sectors.

    Sahar Hashemi OBE

    Coffee Republic & Skinny Candy

    A former lawyer, Sahar started the UK’s first chain of coffee bars with her brother Bobby, building Coffee Republic to 110 stores and a £50 million market cap in five years. Later she founded market segment-defining sugar-free sweets brand Skinny Candy, selling it to confectionery conglomerate Glisten PLC in 2007.

     

    Since moving on from her businesses, Sahar has worked to bring start up mindset to big companies facing relentless change and in need of more agility and innovation. Her most recent book Start Up Forever was named The Financial Times Best Business Book of the Month in March 2019.

     

    In 2012 she was awarded an OBE for services to the UK economy and to charity. She has been named “Pioneer to the life of the Nation” by Her Majesty The Queen and Young Global leader by the World Economic Forum.

    Samantha Evans and Shauna Guinn are restaurateurs, food entrepreneurs, writers, TV presenters and outdoor cooking specialists that fuse Southern US cooking with seasonal British ingredients. They slammed the door on their 20-year careers to pursue a life in food together. And in just 6 years went from selling US-style barbecue from a back-street boozer in Wales, to winning OFM Awards ‘Best Restaurant’ for Hang Fire Southern Kitchen in 2018.

     

    They present their own cooking show on BBC One ‘Sam & Shauna’s Big Cook Out’, now on its third season.

     

    Tara Mei

    Tara started Kitchen Table Projects in 2015 by combining her two most favourite things: food and making things happen. After running her own food business after graduating, she knew how challenging being a food entrepreneur can be. There had to be a better way to go about it!

     

    Tara has worked with over 500 food brands, supporting them through business bootcamps, speed mentoring sessions, networking nights and retail pop-ups.

     

    One of the biggest challenges for emerging brands is bringing their product to market, so Tara has recently launched Hotcakes, a simple and convenient online B2B platform.

    Dominique Woolf

    The Woolf Kitchen

    Dominique founded The Woolf’s Kitchen in June 2020, during lockdown with her three young kids in tow. Initially selling a range of spicy sauces inspired by her Thai roots, the business has gone from strength to strength, launching in Selfridges in spring 2021.
     
    A Leith’s trained food writer, Dominique is passionate about creating unique products and has since developed a range of premium nuts, pastes and chilli oils.
